Skymap - The Universe on the Go Board
This project presents a manifesto addressing the current condition of the contemporary art and design landscape in China. Inspired by Eric Cai Shiwei’s call for innovation, it reflects on the historical context that shaped China’s creative culture and encourages designers to reconsider their role within a rapidly transforming society. During the 1980s and 1990s, a period marked by economic transition and cultural uncertainty, much of China’s visual culture relied heavily on imitation and external references. Today, as the country has moved beyond that era, contemporary designers are confronted with a new responsibility: to move away from dependency and to pursue originality.
Through this manifesto, the project advocates for a generation of designers who respond to their own cultural and social context—resisting repetition, embracing independent thinking, and redefining what originality can mean in contemporary China.
